Queer As Folk & Giveaway

Published January 12, 2013 by ellenheights

Hey guys, gals and new followers!

Don’t forget to comment on my GIVEAWAY for a chance to win TWO free ebooks! Ends Next Thurs (17th) 🙂

Anyway, just wanted to share the latest box set I’ve gotten into, and possibly get some views. I bought both the American (1st season only) and UK versions of Queer as Folk, and, being a Brit, I started on the UK version.

Oh.my.god.

I LOVED it so much. Slice of life dramas are my favourite, but gosh, I just thought this was brilliant. It was funny, exciting, dramatic, and it had some brilliant love stories. I also really liked how the characters are supposed to be gay archetypes, making the whole thing a kind of fantasy social commentary. I’d like to share one of the best scenes where Stuart, played by Aiden Gillen (who is now Little Finger in Game of Thrones. :O Nice to know he went far!) delivers this uber-cheesy-yet-absolutely-brilliant confession after being blackmailed by his annoying little nephew. It’s one of those scenes that makes you wanna get up on your desks and shout OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN!

The sad part, of course, is the fact that there is only one season, plus two longer episodes in QaF2! 😦

I guess the best shows keep us wanting more long after they finished. I remember wanting to watch this show as a kid, (I was about 10 years old when this was on TV) along with shows like Sex and the City, another big favourite of mine, but I was obviously too young. 😉

Anyway, it was an absolute pleasure. Thanks Russel T. Davis!

I’m soon going to be starting on QaF USA, which a friendly neighborhood gay told me was just as great, but “different”. I bumped into him in HMV and we got talking about shows we love. Always cool when you meet a fellow TV obsessive/ film buff. (I think we’re just anti-social, but I’d take a good box set over the outdoors any day. Admit it. You would too.)

Any opinions on the USA version of QaF very welcome – just don’t go giving away spoilers!

When I got home from work, I flicked on the light and dumped my bags by the door. I took a quick shower, and at eleven thirty, stuck noodles in the microwave before eating them over the sideboard. Tonight had been a late one at work, and I was ready to settle in for the evening. Being twenty-two, this was my first “real” job with a publishing company on Baker Street, and I’d been trying to make a good impression.

I checked my phone and, unsurprisingly, there were no texts other than the one yesterday from my service provider. I threw the phone on my lumpy couch, then went to the kitchen and tossed my empty bowl in the sink. Fuck men, I thought; who needed call backs anyway?

I kicked off my comfortable work shoes then tugged off my blouse and vest before peeling off my tights and slipping my skirt down. I put on my old Iron Maiden T-shirt and slipped into bed, grateful for the cool sheets against my skin after a long, hard day. I’d been packing up mail to send out for marketing purposes, and I’d given myself more paper-cuts than I had gotten as a child making Christmas cards.

It began to rain. Soon the wind picked up and rattled my little single-glazed window. I stared into the blackness, seeing only the reflection of myself and a mirror-world version of my room. I admired my long hair and combed my fingers through it, rain pattering against my reflected face like teardrops.

Suddenly a thought came to me, causing my heart leap and begin thumping hard. I hadn’t checked my emails. Sitting on the bed, I flipped open my laptop, logged into my email account, and, as if in answer to a wish, one was waiting for me.

It was from the dating site.

I was a little dissatisfied with the male sex right now, so I’d figured I’d try a new strategy. This dating site was my solution, I was sure of it.

I’d loved scrolling through profile after profile, picking and choosing the men who attracted me. This stuff was like a catalogue arranged just for me.

Better still, it was full of the type of men I was most interested in–older men.

I sucked in a deep breath, tucked my hair behind my ears, and clicked open the email. It was the guy I was really hoping to hear back from. His email said:

Hi Amy!

Thank you for your message. I’m flattered you wanted to talk to me. To answer your first question, yes, I do have some pretty appalling tastes in music. I apologise for writing the names Black Sabbath and Fleetwood Mac together on the same page; it was naughty of me. Hopefully you can forgive me.

To answer your second question, the answer is yes: I’d love to meet up with you.

So, Amy, here’s the real question: How’s tomorrow for you?

I let out a little squeal of delight as I read it. Tomorrow, he’d said! So he was mature, funny, decisive, and prompt. So far, so perfect.
